What relevant education do you have?
My master’s degree is in English with a concentration in Linguistics. My MA and graduate certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language included coursework in modern English grammar, syntax, semantics, and applied linguistics.
I am also continuing my professional development through the Editorial Freelancers Association webinars and courses, and of course devouring books about writing and editing. (I recently read The Subversive Copy Editor by Carol Fisher Saller and I’m currently working on The Editor’s Companion by Steve Dunham and On Writing Well by William Zinsser.)
What experience do you have?
Most of my experience comes from the world of higher education, but I am excited to expand my clientele. In graduate school, I was a Writing Center tutor who worked with non-native writers of all levels to improve their papers. Since receiving my master’s degree, I have taught undergraduate- and graduate-level international students the process and conventions of academic writing.
Do you edit ESL authors?
I love working with multilingual authors! I will be happy to polish your writing using US American English grammar and style conventions.
What technology do you use?
Like many editors, my preference is to do both copy editing and proofreading in Microsoft Word using the Track Changes and Comments features. I am also happy to use the Suggestion mode in Google Docs or comment on pdfs in Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you have a manuscript in another format, please contact me to discuss.
Will you edit my college application essays?
Academic integrity is of the utmost importance. In general, I provide writing tutoring to high school and undergraduate students. Through tutoring, I can help you identify areas for improvement in your own writing. I can also give suggestions, but the work will still be your own.
Will you edit my thesis or dissertation?
For graduate students, I am happy to edit your work as long as your professor or advisor approves.
So do you only edit academic writing?
No! As an avid reader and lifelong learner, I love to work in different genres. I enjoy helping clients with job application materials to put their best foot forward. Additionally, I enjoy working on websites, blogs, and other genres that are written for a wide audience.
